In this video segment from Cyberchase, someone has kidnapped Chewcrocca, a giant cybercrocodile. The CyberSquad must act as crime scene investigators as they search for the kidnapper. Their only clues are a footprint and a handprint. They create a physical profile of the suspect by using the footprint and handprint as non-standard measures, build a model, and then compare the three suspects to their model.

Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame: Before there were standard measuring tools, like rulers and yardsticks, what do you think people might have used when they wanted to measure the length of something? If you wanted to measure a distance on your face, for example, between your eyes or from your nose to your lip, what part of your body might you use?  You may want to test this out with a friend.

Focus: In this video segment, the CyberSquad reviews some of the information they discovered about the physical size of the cybercrocodile kidnapper. What did they find out about foot length and height? What did they find out about their own arm spans as well as the arm span of the kidnapper?

Follow Up: How did the CyberSquad decide which of the suspects was the kidnapper? What measurement information helped them identify the kidnapper?

MATT: Look at all we figured out from just two prints!

INEZ: And if what’s true for us is true for the culprit, we’re in business! Let’s see what this guy looks like!

MATT: Feet!

JACKIE: Height, seven foot lengths. Inez places a balloon, with a 3 knotted ribbon, at the top of the string.

INEZ: Head, three finger wraps! Matt fastens a kerchief under the balloon for a necktie...

JACKIE: Neck, two finger wraps!

INEZ: Armspan, seven foot lengths! Matt place a hand mold at one end of the armspan string...

MATT: Hands!

MATT: All we need now are the three suspects so we can compare each one to our model.

INEZ: Cool!

DIGIT: I’ll round ‘em up! You guys hide Junior - we don’t wanna lose another member of the family! Digit flies off...

MATT: Ladies and gentlemen, using only the footprints and handprints found at the scene of the crime, we determined all of the measurements you see on this life-size model of Chewcroca’s captor!

UNGA/NERO/TARGET: Impossible!/Non me diga!/How?

INEZ: By figuring out that some parts of our bodies are the same length as others, or are multiple lengths of others.

JACKIE: Whoever took Chewcroca will be the same size as our model!

MATT: Time to see which one of you measures up! Who’s first?

UNGA D’BIGTOP: Fine! I’ll go first - I have nothing to hide!

INEZ: Hmm...uh-uh. She’s too short.

INEZ: No way she’s the culprit.

UNGA D’BIGTOP: Told you I didn't do it!

TARGET: Neither did I! See for yourself.

MATT: Target’s right. He’s much too tall!

JACKIE: That leaves you, Mr. Nero!

NERO: Impossible! I'm Nero ‘The Animal Hero’. I would never take Chewcroca!

MATT: Oh yeah! Prove it!

NERO: See?

JACKIE: Yes, he’s taller, too! I knew it!

MATT: Oh man, all that work, and nobody fits our profile.

DIGIT: I don’t get it. He looks taller in person than he does on TV.

MATT: Of course! That’s because he’s wearing a hat!

NERO: Easy, amigo!

JACKIE: Oh no!

UNGA D’BIGTOP: Nero! You’re the one who took Chewcroca!

NERO: Ah, a couple of measurements don’t prove anything!

INEZ: Good thing we have lots of measurements, then.

JACKIE: Not only do your arms and height match...

MATT: But so does your head size!

DIGIT: Want to show us your feet? How about your hands? Hmm? Hmmmmmm?

NERO: Alright, alright! I did it!

JACKIE: But why? You love animals.

NERO: She’s the reason I did it! I did it to protect the rare cyber-croc from Unga and her circus side show!
