Explore the Strategy
Apply the Strategy
You will now have the opportunity to apply the strategy in a mapping activity. If feasible, work in teams of four to complete the exercise accurately and completely. Use the information you've gained from the readings and activities in this session. If necessary, use the Internet for further research.
Each team will need the following:
- One blank United States map with present state boundaries drawn;
- One Internet-connected computer to use for research; and
- Colored pencils/markers for drawing routes and territory.
- Step 1:
-
In RED draw the outlines of the Louisiana Territory purchased by Thomas Jefferson for the United States in 1802.
- Step 2:
-
In GREEN draw the entire route of the Lewis and Clark expedition "Corps of Discovery" begun in 1804. You can also trace follow-up expeditions associated with the Purchase -- for example, that of Zebulon Pike -- or outline territories controlled by Native American nations or the range of bison.
- Step 3:
-
Write in the names of any current states whose boundaries fall either within the Louisiana Territory or along the path of Lewis and Clark's expedition.
- Step 4:
-
Decide upon five points to label along the Lewis and Clark route, plus the beginning and ending points of the expedition. Write a brief caption for each point.
After each team has finished, compare your results. Discuss why you chose the five points you labeled.
