In this video segment from Cyberchase, Bianca works as a shoe store employee. She is given the task of placing the order for a shipment of a popular new shoe. The manager supplies Bianca with a chart of sales data to help her decide how many pairs of each size to order. Bianca analyzes the data, but unfortunately she only orders shoes in the most popular sizes and, as a result, she is not able to offer the show to a customer with a larger shoe size.
Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.
What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?
Frame: If we were to look at a graph of the ages of players on a high school baseball team, we would probably see a range of ages. What would you estimate the age of the oldest player would be? How about the age of the youngest player? How old do you think most of the players would be?
Focus: As you watch this video segment, notice that Bianca has a graph with sales data showing the number of shoes sold in different women's sizes. How does she use this data to figure out how many boxes of each size she should order?
Follow Up: Although Bianca was able to read the sales data accurately, her ordering decision didn’t work out so well. Why? Given the same data, what sizes and quantities would you have ordered?
BIANCA: Welcome to Harry's Shoes. If the shoe's tight, it's not right. How can I help you?
WOMAN: Do you have this shoe in my size?
BIANCA: Well what's your size?
WOMAN: I don't know.
BIANCA: Let's have a look. Wooo what color cheese, I mean shoes do you want?
WOMAN: Tan.
BIANCA: Be right back.
BIANCA: Shoes. If the shoe tight, it's not right. How can I help you?
WOMAN: Size eight, black,
BIANCA: Uuuh, uh, um, we, uh, also sell socks over there.
BIANCA: If the shoe's too tight…just sit down over there.
BIANCA: Welcome to Harry's. If the shoe tight, it's not right. How can I help you?
BIANCA: I can't look at another set of piggies. How about I work in the stock room for a while?
BOSS: Sure I just received a sample of a new line of shoes and it's going to be a hot seller. Study the sales data and put an order in for them right away.
BIANCA: Ok.
BIANCA: Let's see, most of the shoes we sell are 7, 7½, 8, 8½. Most people fall into the middle range. Cheese toes, long nails and hairy foot were all 7½ or 8. When sizes are larger than 8½ and smaller than 7 sales start to go down. There are some sizes no one bought.
BOSS: Bianca, don't forget to put in that order. I'm expecting big things with those shoes.
BIANCA: Got it! I know just what to order. The data clusters around sizes 7, 7½, 8, and 8½, so those are the only sizes I need.
BIANCA: Hi, yeah so I would like to place an order. Yes, for sizes 7, 7½, 8, and 8½. Yes, by this afternoon please.
WOMAN: Hi, hand me the shoe in black 7½ please. Thank you.
MAN: I need the shoe in size 7 blue.
BIANCA: Ok, Here you go.
MAN: Thank you.
BIANCA: Data doesn't lie.
MAN: I need a pair in red.
BOTH: Size 8.
BIANCA: There you go, I knew it.
BOSS: Bianca, these shoes are a big hit. The star of the New York Rims is here and she wants one in every color in size 14.
BIANCA: Fourteen. How bout a couple of sevens?
BOSS: We can't be sold out, we just got them today. You did order some of each size. If the shoe's tight, it's not right.
BIANCA: I only ordered size 7, 7½, 8, and 8½ .because those are the sizes we sell the most.
BOSS: Well that's true. But we still carry all sizes. Just because most of our customers are a certain size doesn't mean we forget about the others.
BIANCA: I got it.
BIANCA: This is the latest thing in footwear. It's just like walking barefoot. And they let your feet breathe.
