Discussion Questions: The Atlanta Riot

• Think about Atlanta in 1906. Was the race riot surprising or might it have been anticipated?
• Describe what you know about the play The Clansman. How did the play contribute to the riot? What were some underlying beliefs held by some whites about black men? About white women?
• Based upon what you know, what might have been some other conditions that lead to the riot?
• Describe the impact of the riot on W.E.B. DuBois, Walter White and Booker T. Washington. How did each man respond?  Did the riot change their views?
• What attitudes do you think African Americans might have developed in the aftermath of the riot?
