Discussion Questions: Off the Grid
- IIf you could keep only three or four of the items you use regularly that require electricity, which would they be? Why are these important to you?
- We take for granted the ability to flip a switch to turn on an electrical appliance or other device. However, the source of our electricity is limited; currently it comes primarily from gas and coal -- carbon-based fuels -- and there isn't always enough to meet our needs. Have you considered using any alternative energy sources to help produce power? Explain why or why not.
- Would it be effective to install a windmill to generate power for your home or apartment? Explain why or why not.
- Every technological solution has tradeoffs. Pick an example from your everyday life, such as the automobile. What are the benefits of using a car for transportation? What are the drawbacks? How could the drawbacks be reduced while the benefits are preserved?
- How can we reduce the drawbacks of wind power while taking advantage of the benefits?
