In this video segment from Teaching Middle School Life Science, master teacher and education specialist Sally Crissman uses a range of instruments to introduce single-celled pond organisms to a small group of middle school students. Crissman explains that by viewing organisms that are practically invisible with instruments that extend our vision—including hand lenses, microscopes, and video—students learn more about what’s living in water. Often, these are living things we don’t know are there. Crissman uses a poster and then video to help students learn to identify two organisms in particular, paramecia and amoebae.
