In this video from Physics by Inquiry, two teachers participating in an inquiry-based professional development activity discuss electric circuits. After developing some concepts about circuits in an earlier activity, they learn to reason with and quantify these concepts to develop rules about resistance. They use inquiry skills to interpret circuit diagrams and to understand circuits of increasing complexity.

open Discussion Questions

You may find it useful to watch this video with a group of your colleagues and then discuss it together.
  • What inquiry skills are these teachers using?
  • What concepts must these teachers understand before learning about the mathematical equations related to resistance?
  • Why do you think inquiry practices are strongly supported in science education?
