In this video segment from Teaching Middle School Physical Science, teacher Ayala Galton asks her students to make observations during an investigation of different fluids. The students observe properties such as smell, solubility, and viscosity and try to expand their understanding of the relationships between liquids. Galton says that the activity helps students make connections between their observations and prior knowledge, although she concludes at the end of the video that the students need more help with the concept of solubility.

open Discussion Questions

You may find it useful to watch this video with a group of your colleagues and then discuss it together.
  • How do these students’ explanations support their observations?
  • In your opinion, are these students making connections between what they are observing and the scientific concepts the activities are intended to convey? What specific actions or words in this video support your conclusion?
  • Discuss your thoughts about how these students’ explanations support their observations. Were any of their observations influenced by their prior experience? Base your ideas on specific evidence from the video. Also, explain how Galton assesses student understanding.
