In this video segment from Teaching Middle School Life Science, teacher Monica Chrambach talks about the limitations of the model she uses to help teach her seventh-grade students about the digestive system. She details some of the limitations and the ways in which it can be misleading, and she demonstrates how she uses class discussion to review the deficiencies. She also explains that models like this one cannot always be complete because the students have yet to learn about certain related aspects, such as some of the more advanced chemistry involved.

open Discussion Questions

You may find it useful to watch this video with a group of your colleagues and then discuss it together.
  • What are the limitations Chrambach identifies in her model?
  • Describe a model or analogy about life science that you use with students in your own classroom. How do you think your model helps students learn?
  • In what ways do you think models can be misleading? Cite examples from the models you or your colleagues use. Where do these models break down?
