In this video segment from Teaching Middle School Life Science, teacher Monica Chrambach describes how and why she created the digestion model she uses with her seventh-grade students. Chrambach thought of ways in which students could learn through experience what is otherwise an abstract and complex topic. Using a mix of store-bought items and classroom resources, she designed a model that was of appropriate complexity for the subject and for the students.

open Discussion Questions

You may find it useful to watch this video with a group of your colleagues and then discuss it together.
  • How does Chrambach make the abstract concept of digestion more concrete? Which parts of the model does she have these students build? Whatdoes she prepare herself? Why?
  • How might you apply this type of approach to a model about another life science topic?
