In this video segment from Teaching Middle School Life Science, teacher Tracy Polte asks her fifth-grade students for their ideas on how to set up an experiment that tests the speed of a crayfish. Polte explains that having the students think about and discuss the experimental setup is more beneficial for them than her simply dictating the steps, because it gives them a greater sense of ownership of the experiment. She also explains that asking a question that is relatively easy to test is a good way to approach inquiry questions for students at this age.
