In this video segment from Teaching Elementary Life Science, teacher Gail Gibson works with her first-grade students on an activity classifying leaves according to physical characteristics such as color, relative size, or texture. Gibson explains that in this activity students get to compare, observe, and evaluate their own work and each other’s work. She also says that the skills and attitudes she’s developing in her students are helping to build their confidence in their ability to understand science and learn more about what they don’t already know.
