Take a peek at the artistic side of science in this virtual exhibit, featuring work by Eva Sutton, Alexis Rockman and Sidney Harris.

open Background Essay

When Rosalind Franklin took the first x-ray photograph of crystalline DNA in 1952, genetics revealed its artistic side. More recently, and especially since the start of the Human Genome Project in 1990, artists are turning to "all things genetic" as a source of inspiration. Featured here are three examples of contemporary gene-art.

open Discussion Questions

  • What do you think each artist was trying to communicate about genetic engineering?
  • What caught your eye and imagination in these examples of the gene art?
  • What do think about genetic engineering of livestock and other animals? How do you think the artist who created "The Farm" feels about genetic engineering?
  • What do you think about creating genetic hybrids, by swapping genes between organisms?
