Start your engines and join 7th grade science teacher Beth Manning as her students compete in an edible car contest. See the decision-making skills and creativity needed for students to work in teams designing their cars, testing them, and then finally competing in the big race.
What aspects of the project kept the students engaged enough to think of the food as construction materials and not as snacks?
Why do you think giving the students creative freedom was so valuable? Are there any drawbacks? What are some ways you can work more creativity into your own classroom?
How does Ms. Manning gear the lesson back towards real-life engineering problems?
Academic standards correlations on Teachers' Domain use the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) database of state and national standards, provided to NSDL projects courtesy of JES & Co.
We assign reference terms to each statement within a standards document and to each media resource, and correlations are based upon matches of these terms for a given grade band. If a particular standards document of interest to you is not displayed yet, it most likely has not yet been processed by ASN or by Teachers' Domain. We will be adding social studies and arts correlations over the coming year, and also will be increasing the specificity of alignment.
