Adult education instructor Kay Combs and students practice reading and summarizing a text for better comprehension.
These resources are part of KET's Reading Instructional Strategies collection.
In this video, adult education instructor Kay Combs and students summarize a short text. She encourages them to collaborate and discuss the main ideas of the reading with the group.
Summarizing a text leads to better reading comprehension. Combs asks her class to work together to answer who, what, when, where, and why questions about the text in order to summarize it. They write down who the narrative is about, what happens, and so forth. As they read, they actively search for the answers to those questions. Once they are able to summarize by identifying those elements of the text, they have a better understanding of what they have read.
