Adult education instructor Kay Combs explains how using prediction and inference techniques can help students with reading comprehension.
These resources are part of KET's Reading Instructional Strategies collection.
In this video, adult education instructor Kay Combs discusses a reading lesson that uses prediction and inference. Predicting what comes next and actively trying to infer the author’s meaning can help readers understand and retain information.
For this lesson, Combs introduced the materials, modeled using prediction and inference as she read, began asking students to collaborate, and finished with a guided practice session. Students used a graphic organizer to write down their predictions and thoughts after each sentence.
