open Background Essay

Repeated reading helps learners to understand content. Alternate reading aloud between the instructor and learners allows for the reinforcement of hearing the material while reading along. Although some learners may be hesitant, it is helpful to have them read aloud, as well.

In this video, adult education instructor Tanya Johnson both reads aloud and coaches learners as they read aloud. She emphasizes that the best way to understand a passage is to “read it again.”

open Discussion Questions

  • Do you ever read aloud to your learners? Why or why not?
  • After viewing “Teacher Interview: Making Learning Relevant,” reflect on your own classroom. In what real-life contexts is reading relevant to your learners? How can you make real-life reading relevant in your classroom?
