open Background Essay

The reading abilities of adult learners can vary widely. While some may practice regular reading or read for pleasure, you will likely find that many lack the ability to read fluently. Fluent readers are able to read at a natural, conversational pace and derive meaning from what they are reading.

In this video, adult education instructor Tanya Johnson explains that word accuracy, rate of speed, and expression all contribute to reading fluency. Johnson reads aloud, demonstrating both fluent and dysfluent reading.

open Discussion Questions

  • What sort of materials do your learners read? Would you say that your learners are fluent readers? Explain your answer.
  • In “Teacher Interview: Checking for Student Understanding,” adult education instructor Tanya Johnson discusses several techniques to check for student understanding. Do you use some of her techniques? What other methods do you employ to determine student understanding?
  • After viewing “Teacher Interview: Making Learning Relevant,” reflect on your own classroom. In what real-life contexts is reading important? How can you make real-life reading relevant in your classroom?
  • Learners often do not make a connection between their everyday lives and the concepts presented in the classroom. In the video “Teacher Interview: Learning as a Lifelong Pursuit,” Tanya Johnson explains the importance of student choice and of making connections to the real world. How do you make those connections in your classroom? Do you agree that student choice is an important component of adult learning? Explain. What choices do your learners have?
