open Background Essay

In this video, adult education instructor Tanya Johnson employs decoding as a strategy to improve reading fluency. Decoding is a helpful strategy for understanding individual words.

One approach to decoding is to memorize commonly used words. Johnson uses flash cards to review the 600 most used English words in reading and writing. Memorizing words by sight allows learners to quickly recognize familiar words and move on to unfamiliar ones. Memorizing is also a helpful technique for words that cannot be sounded out, such as through, enough, and thorough.
