Adult education instructor Kay Combs talks about why she chose to use a children’s book for a reading comprehension lesson.
What kinds of materials do you use for teaching reading comprehension? Do you try to connect materials to current events or other issues that students may identify with? Explain.
Do you agree or disagree with Combs’ use of a children’s book in an adult education classroom? Discuss.
How do you make reading a positive experience for your students?
How did Combs’ text selection help activate the students’ prior knowledge? What other kinds of reading materials help students make connections to things they already know?
What methods do you use to activate prior knowledge in other subject areas? For instance, do you connect math skills to everyday tasks like cooking, shopping, or budgeting? How does this help your students?
Academic standards correlations on Teachers' Domain use the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) database of state and national standards, provided to NSDL projects courtesy of JES & Co.
We assign reference terms to each statement within a standards document and to each media resource, and correlations are based upon matches of these terms for a given grade band. If a particular standards document of interest to you is not displayed yet, it most likely has not yet been processed by ASN or by Teachers' Domain. We will be adding social studies and arts correlations over the coming year, and also will be increasing the specificity of alignment.
