Amy Mainzer, principal investigator for the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission, reveals some new observations about space rocks in our solar system in these videos from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Using an infrared telescope on board a satellite, the WISE mission is helping scientists understand the true number, sizes, locations, and physical make-up of asteroids and comets. The telescope can distinguish between near-Earth objects as small as a house and those farther away from Earth, such as the “main-belt” asteroids found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
