In this Cyberchase interactive, you must complete a series of shape, number and color patterns to crack Hacker's safe. Given the first four terms in the pattern, you must select the correct color/number/shape combination of the next term.

open Frame/Focus

Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame: There are patterns all around us—for example, in numbers, design, music, and dance. Can you think of any specific patterns you have noticed? You might already be familiar with one type of number pattern, a sequence, which is an ordered list of numbers. One particular type of sequence you will find is an arithmetic sequence, which is a list of numbers in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is the same (for example: 0, 4, 8, 12). Think about street addresses; is there a pattern in the numbers on one side of the street? If the houses on Main Street are numbered 2, 4 ,6 ,8, 10, what are the numbers of the next two houses on the street?

Focus: In this Cyberchase interactive, figure out the next term in each sequence. Also decide if the number sequence is an arithmetic sequence.

open Follow Up

  • Did it matter which order you selected color, number, and shape?
  • Which patterns included an arithmetic sequence?
  • What shapes were used in the patterns?
  • Create your own pattern (using numbers, or letters or colors or shapes) and ask the student next to you to find the next three terms in your sequence.
