When dealing with a function, you start with one input number and then you perform at least one operation on it, based on the rule of the function, and you get a resulting output number. In this interactive, you will look at both the input numbers and the corresponding output numbers organized in the Before/After chart to find the rule of the function. First select the operation ( +, ─, x , / ) and then select the number. When you know the rule of the function, you will then be able to predict the output for any other number you choose as an input.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame: If you send one text message at 25 cents, two text messages for 50 cents, 3 text messages for 75 cents, how much will 4 texts messages cost? What about 8 text messages? Ten messages? The relationship between the number of messages and the cost can be described by a function (y =.25x where y is the cost and x is the number of text messages). Think about the number of text messages as your input, what did you have to do to that number to get the total cost, or output?

Focus: Look at the number as it comes down the chute. In each case, analyze what happens to the number after it passes through the function machine. Then select the correct operation and number for the function.
