open Background Essay

Guided practice, either in small groups or individually, can increase concept understanding and retention. When the time comes for independent practice, either in a testing, real-life, or homework situation, learners can feel more confident and better prepared to solve problems when they have experienced good guided practice. The instructor's role during guided practice is to allow learners to be challenged and even to struggle, providing guidance only when learners veer into misconception.

open Discussion Questions

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of allowing learners to struggle through a problem?
