Learners review their work after determining missing dimensions, finding the perimeter and finding the area of a compound shape.

These resources are part of KET's Math Instructional Strategies: Geometry collection.

open Background Essay

Many times ABE learners are asked to find a missing dimension of a plane figure. This is a pre-algebra skill that is useful as learners transition to higher levels of mathematics. In determining the perimeter and area of a compound shape, missing dimensions may need to be calculated. This working in different "directions" to come to a solution can help learners to be more flexible and logical in their thinking when they come across a problem that doesn't fit the mold.

open Discussion Questions

  • Is there much discussion when there are differing methods and/or answers on these problems? Do you think this is an advantage, a disadvantage or neither? Explain.
