open Background Essay

Fractions, decimals, and percents are all around us, every day. From cooking to weather prediction, and from shopping to probability, adult students need familiarity with these mathematical representations. Connecting with the students' lives is a powerful strategy to help them realize that there is purpose in their learning that applies to daily living. Research indicates that this realization of purpose is motivating to students, and allows them to take ownership of their learning. Student responsibility for learning increases retention of the concepts and skills learned.
