open Background Essay

While the civil rights era is generally identified as 1954 - 1965, beginning with the Brown decision and culminating in the Voting Rights Act, its roots go back to the post-World War II period (and even earlier) and its impact continues up to today. This timeline highlights events from 1945 - 1975, making it possible to trace the court cases that led up to Brown as well as post-1965 desegregation efforts and the legacy of the Civil Rights movement on electoral politics, activism, culture, and other human rights movements.
