When the arts (drama, music, dance, etc..) are included to introduce, reinforce, or even extend a lesson within a content area, student motivation increases and often student learning improves as well. This lesson plan template supports teachers as they consider how to integrate the arts into instruction.

open Background Essay

Arts integration is an important way to enhance student learning and comprehension. Studies in neuroscience have found strong links between arts education and cognitive development (e.g. thinking, problem solving, concept understanding, information processing, and overall intelligence). Since many schools have decreased the instructional time for art and music, it is important for teachers to intentionally plan for the integration of the arts in content areas. This lesson plan provides teachers with essential questions to consider in order to plan for this integration.

open Discussion Questions

  • How much time is devoted during the instructional week to arts education?
  • How is arts education related to the students’ cognitive development?
  • What are arts opportunities available in our community that relate to the school’s curriculum?
  • What are ways that our school can improve the integration of the arts and content areas?
