Although rejection is not easy, there are strategies that performers can use to manage it. In this video from the Broadway or Bust website, coaches and young performers outline ways to stay resilient, including having a life outside the performing arts and building a support group. Additional advice includes preparing well for an audition and doing one’s best work. It’s possible that a director may remember a performer for a future or a different part.

open Teaching Tips

Here are suggested ways to engage students with this video and with activities related to this topic.

  • Viewing the video: Use the following suggestions to guide students’ viewing of the video.
    • Before viewing: Introduce the topic of rejection—an inescapable aspect of life as a performer. Ask students to think about an experience of rejection in an audition (or in another performing arts context).
    • After viewing: Ask students to list the tips for dealing with rejection offered in the video. Write them on the board and ask students to brainstorm additional ideas.
  • Staying physically and mentally strong is important for a performer. Ask students to pair up or work in small groups and come up with three ideas for maintaining physical and mental strength as a performer.
  • How might performers feel about others who are auditioning for the same parts? Have students role play healthy ways to relate to individuals they might encounter in this situation.
