A young performer is preparing a well-known and challenging song in this video adapted from Broadway or Bust. She works with a coach to find a successful way to connect to the song and accommodate her type of voice and temperament. He suggests specific ideas to think about while singing and uses a scene partner to help her build the interpretation.

open Teaching Tips

Here are suggested ways to engage students with this video and with activities related to this topic.

  • Have students discuss how the coach helps the singer perform the song. How does having her scene partner turn his back to her make a difference?
  • Several times, the coach suggests that the singer visualize something—for instance, singing the song as if she were on her knees. Ask students to discuss how they might use this technique of visualization in a song they are working on.
  • Talk about the role of the coach and the advice he gives. Show the video again and ask students to focus on him, putting themselves in his mind and trying to see what he sees in the performance. What is different about what the coach notices? Consider how you could be your own coach, looking at your performance through somebody else’s eyes or on a video.
