After you watch the video, discuss these questions with colleagues or reflect on them in your journal:

  1. Why did the archaic Indians change from being nomadic hunters to establishing a more permanent, agrarian culture? How did the Mississippian culture eventually emerge from this early Indian culture?
  2. What are some of the theories for why the early Mississippians built the large mounds at Moundville? What information do we know about the mounds? How do these structures compare to structures built by other early civilizations?
  3. Did you discover anything that surprised you about ancient cultures when learning about Moundville? What might be surprising or unexpected information for your students?
