Using Scale City To Teach Proportional Reasoning

Special Collection

Launched by Kentucky Educational Television in 2009, Scale City: The Road to Proportional Reasoning is an online mathematics resource for middle-grades students featuring fun and engaging videos and interactive simulations to teach the mathematics of scale and scaling. It’s available at www.scalecity.org.

Using Scale City To Teach Proportional Reasoning, an interactive, media-rich, professional development resource, includes three self-paced teaching modules on the effective classroom use of Scale City.

Teaching modules 1 and 3 feature videos of an experienced teacher working one-on-one with four middle school students as they verbalize their mathematical understandings and work through problems that require them to use proportional reasoning as well as prerequisite skills in multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percents, and measurement. The second teaching module is a tour of the Scale City website.
