Louisville Water Company: Tunneling for Water
Special Collection
Produced by Louisville Water Company, these four videos for grades 4-6 document the creation of four wells and a mile-long tunnel that use riverbank filtration to supply water to homes and businesses.
Viewed in order, the videos outline the excavation and construction process for the project. Individually, they illustrate specific STEM concepts through on-location video, interviews with engineers, and easy-to-understand graphics.
For example, students learn about earth science topics such the formation of the Ohio River and of sedimentary rock layers. They also explore engineering activities such as blasting bedrock to create an entry shaft or using specialized equipment to dig the tunnel.
The collection also includes the complete uncut version of Tunneling for Water and a teacher’s guide with content correlations, history, vocabulary, and suggested activities.
Video produced by Louisville Water Company and adapted for Teachers' Domain by KET.
